For grown-ups, the Parc del Castell de l’Oreneta is an area of urban woodland between Collserola hills and the city, a place where they can lose themselves and observe the wide variety of Mediterranean vegetation. Oreneta is the Catalan name for a species of bird typical from the area (English: Barn Swallow).
For the little ones, it represents a world of excitement where they can travel on a miniature steam train or ride a pony. The Centre de Estudis de Modelisme Vapor (Centre for studies of Steam models) has maintained a small steam train ride in the park since 1998.
The Parc del Castell de l’Oreneta is situated on the land formerly occupied by two estates: that of Can Bonavia, belonging to the family of Count Milà, and that of the Castle of l’Oreneta, belonging to the family Tous, who built the castle which gives the park its name. This is a picture of the castle in its glorious days at the end of the 19th century. The castle was destroyed by a fire during the Spanish Civil War (1936-39). Today just its ruins remains.
