The short URL of the present article is:

Empúries was a settlement on the Mediterranean coast of the comarca (county) of Alt Empordà in northern Catalonia. Nowadays is part of the municipality of the town of l’Escala. The settlement was founded in 575 BC by Greek colonists from Phocaea and named the settlement Emporion, meaning “trading place” in Greek. It was later occupied by the Romans, but in the Early Middle Ages, when its exposed coastal position left it open to marauders, the town was abandoned.

The ruins of Empúries constitutes a privileged site for understanding the evolution of urban Greek in the western Mediterranean, as well as to examine the town planning of the final period of the Roman Republic and its transformation during the post-imperial era.

Apologies for the low quality of the video presented but we thought it was interesting nonetheless to illustrate this site [Note: certainly a very surrealist composition from a very melodramatic youtuber! :)]
