The Aeri del Port (cable car) was designed to link the 1929 Universal Exhibition in Montjuïc with its seafaring section. However, works were not completed until 1931.During the Spanish Civil War (1936-39), it was shut down, the cables were removed, and its two towers, Sant Sebastià and Jaume Ist, became strategic points for defending the port. In 1963, it was put into operation again, and, since then, it only stopped transporting travellers whilst the towers were being restored over a period of two years (1995-1996). The journey, which lasts for about 10 minutes at a height of around 70 metres, offers spectacular views of the port and the city.
